Abstract

The study created play-based teaching resources to improve computational skills of Grades 1 and 2 learners at Calayucay Elementary School. The learning process of mathematics equips learners with logical reasoning skills and problem-solving abilities which lead to better academic results. The engagement problems in multigrade classrooms occur because traditional teaching methods fail to address their restricted teaching resources and their various learning requirements. The study evaluated the effectiveness of play-based learning strategies in teaching mathematics through its assessment of their mathematical teaching performance. The research used a pretest-posttest design. The researchers used The Rapid Mathematics Assessment Tool (RMAT) to evaluate learners' computational abilities before and after the intervention. The developed instructional materials were created using selected Mathematics competencies which included games and manipulatives and collaborative activities to support active learning. The research showed that play-based instructional materials helped students improve their computational abilities while their classroom involvement and mathematics motivation increased. The study found that play-based materials function as effective teaching tools which schools can implement economically while they meet specific classroom needs in multigrade and resource-limited environments.
